In the name of God Amen. The eleventh day of October AD 1678 and in the thirteenth year of the reign of our Sovereign Lord Charles the Second by the grace of God of England, Scotland, France and Ireland King, Defender of the Faith, etc., I Anne SHEPPARD of Islington in the County of Middlesex, widow, being weak in body but of a sound and perfect mind and memory (thanks be to God for the same) but considering the frailty and uncertainty of this life, and that it is appointed for all men once to die, but how soon no man knows, do therefore make and ordain this my last will and testament in manner and form following (that is to say) in the first place I bequeath my soul to Almighty God my creator hoping for salvation through his mercies and through the merits of Jesus Christ my Saviour and Redeemer to have eternal life in glory. My body I commit to the earth from whence it came, to be decently buried at the discretion of my executors herein after named, and as touching and concerning the temporal estate which Almighty God out of his goodness has bestowed on me in this world I do dispose and bequeath the same as follows (viz.) my will and mind is that all my debts and funeral charges be justly duly and speedily paid and satisfied.  ITEM; I give and bequeath unto my son-in-law Edward LANGLEY one gold seal ring of the value of twenty four shillings.  ITEM; I give and bequeath unto my daughter-in-law Margaret LANGLEY, wife of the said Edward Langley the sum of ten pounds to be paid unto her own hands for her own particular and separate use and benefit at the end of six months next after my decease, it being my will and desire that her said husband shall not claim or intermeddle in the receiving or disposing of the said ten pounds without the consent of my said daughter, but that her receipt under her own hand shall be a good and sufficient discharge to my executors for the same as fully as if her husband had signed the same.  ITEM; I give and bequeath unto Austin Langley, Margaret Langley, Samuel Langley and John Langley, children of the said Edward Langley the sum of one hundred pounds to be equally divided amongst them, which said one hundred pounds I will shall be placed to their respective uses at the end of twelve months next after my decease into the Chamber of London and that their shares and parts of in and to the same shall be paid to them respectively when they shall attain their respective ages of one and twenty years, and in case the said Margaret Langley shall happen to be married before she shall attain the age of one and twenty years that then her share and part of in and to the said one hundred pounds shall be paid to her on the day of her marriage, and if any of them the said Austin Langley, Margaret Langley, Samuel Langley or John Langley shall happen to die and depart this life before they or any of them shall attain their respective ages of one and twenty years or before the share and part of him her or them so dying shall accrue due and be payable, then I do give and bequeath the share part and portion of him her or them so happening to die unto the survivor or survivors of them the said Austin Langley, Margaret Langley, Samuel Langley and John Langley equally to be parted and divided amongst them and to be paid to him her or them respectively at such time and times as their respective legacies shall be due and payable to them respectively as aforesaid.  ITEM; I give and bequeath unto Mary LANGLEY daughter also of the said Edward Langley the sum of one hundred pounds to be paid to her when she shall attain the age of one and twenty years or be married which shall first happen, and in the meantime for the better securing the same I do also will that at the end of twelve months next after my decease, the said one hundred pounds shall be put into the said Chamber of London for the use of the said Mary Langley, and if the said Mary Langley shall happen to depart this life before her said age of one and twenty years or day of marriage then I do give and bequeath the said one hundred pounds (hereby to her bequeathed) unto the said Margaret Langley and Samuel Langley, brother and sister unto the said Mary Langley equally to be parted betwixt them and to the survivors of them, and to be paid to them respectively at such time and times as before mentioned respective legacies shall be respectively due to them as aforesaid, I do hereby will that the interest of both the above mentioned one hundred pounds shall be paid to the hands of my said daughter-in-law Margaret Langley towards the maintenance and education of the aforesaid children until their respective ages of one and twenty years or days of marriage which shall first happen, and that her receipt signed with her own hand shall from time to time be a sufficient discharge for the same to such person or persons who shall pay the same.  ITEM; my will and meaning is and I do hereby appoint that in case the said Margaret Langley the mother shall happen to die before the said legacies shall accrue due and be payable to the said Austin Langley, Margaret Langley, Samuel Langley and John Langley, and Mary Langley that then the interest money for the said two hundred pounds shall from the time of the decease of the said Margaret Langley continue in the said Chamber of London until such time as the said legacies shall accrue due and payable as aforesaid, and then the same the same to be paid together with all such interest as shall be accrued due for the same according to the true intent of this my last will and testament.  ITEM; I give and bequeath to my cousin John PRICE son of Jeffery PRICE late of the City of Worcester deceased, the sum of fifty pounds to be paid to him at the end of one whole year next after my decease.  ITEM; I give and bequeath unto my cousins Anne Price and Margaret Price sisters to the said John Price the sum of thirty pounds apiece to be paid to them respectively at the end of one year next after my decease.  ITEM; I give and bequeath unto Mr … Webb, Minister of the Gospel the sum of five pounds, and to and amongst three such other ministers of the Gospel as my executors shall think fit the sum of fifteen pounds to be equally divided amongst them.  ITEM; I give and bequeath unto my maidservant Mary West the sum of fifteen pounds and unto John Medhurst, silk weaver in Southwark the sum of five pounds.  ITEM; I give and bequeath unto the widow Pollard of Wilsdon and unto Edward Pollard her son the sum of fifty shillings apiece.  ITEM; I give and bequeath unto the widow Bond of St Katherine’s the sum of forty shillings and unto Eleanor Bond her daughter the sum of thirty shillings.  ITEM; I give and bequeath unto Mrs Anderton widow to Mrs Rogers widow, sister to the said Mrs Anderton, and to Mrs Margaret Blackwell in Spittle Fields the sum of five pounds apiece.  ITEM; I give and bequeath unto Mr … Dodd, Minister, who dwells at Islington in the County of Middlesex, the sum of ten pounds.  ITEM; I give and bequeath unto my kinsman Jeffery Price the sum of ten pounds to be paid according to the discretion of my executors hereafter named towards the putting and placing him out to be an apprentice.  ITEM; I give and bequeath unto Elizabeth Price the sum of five pounds.  ITEM; I give and bequeath unto Frances Price the sum of ten pounds.  ITEM; I give and bequeath unto my late husband’s three sisters the sum of five pounds apiece if they be living at the time of my decease.  ITEM; I give unto Anne Guy the sum of five pounds.  ITEM; I give and bequeath unto George Fowler, Minister, and to Edward Cook, Gent, the sum of ten pounds apiece, which said George Fowler and Edward Cook I do hereby make and ordain executors of this my last will and testament hereby revoking disannulling all former and other wills and testaments by me heretofore made.  And all the rest residue and remainder and overplus of my estate (if any shall happen to be) I do hereby will and appoint shall be paid and disposed of by my said executors at their discretion unto and amongst such and so many godly poor people as by them shall be thought meet.  And lastly my express will and meaning is that if the above mentioned Edward Langley and Margaret Langley his wife or either of them or any other person or persons by their (xxx) assent or procurement or on their behalf shall hinder or go about to hinder or delay the probate or execution of this my last will and testament that then the legacies herein and hereby bequeathed to them or either of them or their or either of their children shall be utterly void and of no effect to such of them who shall so hinder or delay the same, and the monies herein mentioned to be to them or any or either of them bequeathed to remain in the hands of my said executors until such time as my said executors shall be absolutely and sufficiently freed from their disturbance and trouble by some act and deed of the said Edward Langley and Margaret his wife.  In witness whereof to each sheet of this my last will and testament containing five in number I have put my hand and to the top of the first sheet and to the bottom of the last sheet I have put my seal the day and year first above written – (the mark of) Anne Sheppard – signed sealed delivered published and declared by the within named Ann Sheppard to be her last will and testament in the presence of us, the word ‘five’ in the last line of the third sheet being first interlinked – Edward Bailey, Hugh Radcliffe (xxx), Mary Johnston, Elizabeth Starrs
