In the name of God, Amen; I Dame MARY FREDERICK, widow, the Relict and Executrix of Sir JOHN FREDERICK, late of London, Knight, deceased, being weak in body, but of sound memory, praise be given to Almighty God for the same, do make and ordain this my last will and testament in manner and form following (that is to say): First and principally I commit my soul into the hands of God my Creator, hoping to be saved through the alone merits of Jesus Christ my Redeemer, and my body to be buried at the discretion of my Executor hereafter named, and my will and desire is that my said Executor do cause my body to be privately interred in the Parish Church of St. Olave’s Jury, London on or about the hour of nine o’clock at night, the usual time of my going to bed. And as to what worldly estate it has pleased God to entrust me with all, I give and bequeath the same as follows, vizt. Imprimis I give and bequeath to my son THOMAS FREDERICK Esq the sum of one thousand pounds. ITEM; of and out of the debt of two thousand pounds owing me by my son in law ROBERT HOOKES of London Esq and Dame JUDITH HERNE als. HOOKES his wife my daughter or one of them, I give to my said daughter Dame Judith the sum of one thousand pounds. ITEM’ I give and bequeath to my daughter ELIZABETH HERNE the wife of JOSEPH HERNE Esq, the sum of one thousand pounds. ITEM; I give to my daughter REBECCA GOSFRIGHT the wife of FRANCIS GOSFRIGHT of London, Merchant, the sum of one thousand pounds. ITEM; I give and bequeath to my said son Thomas Frederick his executors and administrators the sum of three hundred and twenty pounds in consideration whereof I will that he and they shall pay unto my sister ANNE NICHOLAS or unto such person or persons as my said sister Anne Nicholas shall from time to time by any writing under her hand nominate and appoint to receive the same, one annuity or yearly sum of sixteen pounds during her natural life by quarterly payments at the four most usual feast days in the year (that is to say) the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, the feast of Michael the Archangel, and the Birth of our Lord God, by even and equal portions, the first payment thereof to commence and be made on such of the said feast days as shall first happen next upon my decease. ITEM; I give and bequeath to my three nieces JUDITH SPARROW, ANNE WILLEY and MARY PRICE, three of the daughters of my said sister Anne Nicholas to each and every of them the sum of thirty pounds amounting in the whole to the sum of ninety pounds, and in case all or any of them the said Judith Sparrow, Anne Willey and Mary Price shall happen to die in my lifetime, then I give and bequeath the said several and respective sums of thirty pounds so bequeathed to my said nieces to and amongst the several child or children of her or them so dying equally to be divided between them. ITEM; I give and bequeath to my said son Thomas Frederick, his executors and administrators the sum of two hundred pounds more in consideration whereof I will that he and they shall pay unto my cousin ANNE EDWARDS, spinster, daughter of WILLIAM EDWARDS, late Citizen and Apothecary of London, deceased or unto such person or persons as she the said Anne Edwards shall from time to time by any writing under her hand nominate and appoint to receive the same, one annuity or yearly sum of ten pounds during her natural life by quarterly payments at the four most usual feast days in the year (that is to say) the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, the feast of Michael the Archangel, and the Birth of our Lord God, by even and equal portions, the first payment thereof to commence and be made on such of the said feast days as shall first happen next upon my decease. ITEM; I give and bequeath to my sister ANNE ROUSE, the sum of fifty pounds. ITEM; I give and bequeath to JOHN CHAPMAN, ROBERT CHAPMAN and MARY CHAPMAN, the children of CHARLES CHAPMAN late of London deceased, to each and every of them the sum of one hundred pounds to be paid unto them at their several ages of one and twenty years, and if any of them shall happen to die before he she or they shall respectively attain to their several ages of one and twenty years, then I give and bequeath the share or shares of him her and them so dying to the survivors and survivor of them; and whereas the said Sir John Frederick has by his last will and testament in writing given and bequeathed the sum of one hundred pounds to the said Robert Chapman, and whereas also I have since the death of the said Sir John, laid out and disbursed the sum of one hundred pounds upon the proper [ ] of the said Robert Chapman, towards the putting of him out to be an [Apprentice], now if the said Robert Chapman shall accept of the said sum of one hundred pounds by me disbursed on his account as aforesaid in full discharge of the said sum of one hundred pounds to him given by the said last will of the said Sir John Frederick and shall discharge my executor therefrom, then I give and release to the said Robert Chapman the said sum of one hundred pounds so by me disbursed upon his account and no more; and that then and in such case, the said Robert Chapman to have no further or other benefit by this my last will. ITEM; I give and bequeath to Doctor Greene, Minister of St Olave’s Jury, London the sum of ten pounds and to Mr Kidde, Minister of St. Mary Outwich, London the further sum of ten pounds, and to Mr [Smithe], Minister and Lecturer of St. Giles, Cripplegate, London the further sum of ten pounds, and to Mr Reynold, the Minister the further sum of ten pounds. ITEM; I give and bequeath to sixteen other ministers, such as my executor hereafter named shall think fit, the sum of eighty pounds equally to be divided between them, vizt. to each of them the sum of five pounds. ITEM; I give and bequeath to my cousin JOHN FREDERICK the elder the sum of thirty pounds. ITEM; I give and bequeath to the several persons the several sums mentioned and expressed in the schedule to this my will annexed, which I will shall be taken as part hereof; and I do hereby constitute nominate and appoint my said son Thomas Frederick sole executor of this my last will and testament, hereby revoking all former and other wills by me made. In witness whereof I have put my hand and seal to each sheet of this my will, and to the schedule hereunto annexed (the same being contained in four sheets of paper this eighteenth day of September in the first year of the reign of our Sovereign Lord and Lady William and Mary by the grace of God King and Queen of England etc, Defenders of the Faith etc A.D. 1689 – Mary Frederick – signed sealed published and declared by the said Dame Mary Frederick to be her last will and testament in the presence of us: Paul Godrell, Samuell James, Rebekah Wood.
A Schedule of the legacies whereof mention is made in the last will and testament whereunto the same is annexed.
Impris. To JOHN EDWARDS the sum of forty pounds.
To the Governors of Christ’s Hospital in London the sum of three hundred pounds to be by them laid out in a purchase of lands or ground rents of houses in London of the clear yearly value of fifteen pounds at the least, and my will is that out of the rents of the lands or ground rents so to be purchased [ ] shall be given every two years to three poor children of the said hospital, for the placing of them out apprentices unto better trades.
To Mary Shadwell five pounds.
To Sarah Warner five pounds.
To my coachman that shall serve and live with me at the time of my decease, five pounds.
To the poor inhabiting in Windmill Alley in St Olave’s Jury, London, the sum of five pounds to be distributed among them by my executor as he shall think fit.
To Jane Trout my maidservant (if living with me at the time of my decease) the sum of ten pounds.
To my son Thomas Frederick my household goods, plate, goods, chattels and other estate whatsoever, my debts legacies and funerals being first paid and discharged.
