In the name of God Amen, the 25th day of April in the year of our Lord God (1524) and in the 16th year of the reign of King Henry VIII, I Elizabeth TYRELL widow late the wife of Humfrey TYRELL Esquire being whole of mind and in good memory thanked be Almighty God make ordain and dispose this my present testament and last will in manner and form following, that is to say, first and principally I bequeath and recommend my soul unto Almighty God my creator and saviour and to his glorious mother our blessed Lady Saint Mary the Virgin and to all the holy Company of heaven, and my body to be buried by the body of my said late husband Humfrey Tyrell in the parish church of East Hornden under the same tomb and floor there where my husband lies buried. And I give and bequeath to and for the convenient and needful reparations of the said church 66 shillings and 8 pence. ITEM; I bequeath to the high altar of the same church for my tithes and dictures forgotten or negligently withheld in discharging of my soul 6 shillings and 8 pence. ITEM; I will that my executors undernamed do ordain and provide for two twentals of masses to be sung and said for my soul, my said husband’s soul and all Christian souls in the Abbey of Waltham immediately after my death and those to be sung and said by the Canons of the same place, my executors giving to them for the same 26 shillings and 8 pence. ITEM; I will that my executors immediately after my death do find an honest priest to sing and pray in the parish church of East Hornden for my soul, my husband’s soul and the souls of my father and mother and for the souls of my husband’s father and mother and all Christian souls by the space and term of two whole years, they giving and paying to the same priest for the same 10 marks of lawful money yearly. ITEM; I give and bequeath to every household in the said town of East Hornden at my month’s mind 12 pence. ITEM; at the time of my burial I will that my executors do cause masses and songs to be done and said for my soul as is and shall be convenient for me the residue of the (endering) and charge of my said burial I remit to the discretion of my said executors so that it be not over sumptuous and chargeable to the hindering and loss of this my said last will and testament. ITEM; I give and bequeath to the parson of East Hornden to say mass and dirge at my month’s mind for my soul and all Christian souls 3 shillings and 4 pence. ITEM; I give and bequeath to every church where I have lands 6 shillings and 8 pence under this form following: to the parson or parish priest to say dirige and mass at my month’s mind 12 pence, and among the parishioners in bread cheese and drink 2 shillings and 4 pence, and to the reparations of every of the said churches 3 shillings and 4 pence. ITEM; I give and bequeath to my son Humfrey TYRELL my goblet of silver with the cover and 12 spoons of silver and my cushions and 20 pounds of lawful money which 20 pounds I will shall be paid and delivered unto him by the discretion of my executor. ITEM; I give and bequeath to my said son Humfrey Tyrell 2 feather beds whereof one of them to be the best, 2 mattresses, a (bedding) of tapestry with image, 2 short pillows of down, the best bed of (desmyx) and selour, a long pillow of down, a bolster, a pair of sheets of 2 (breds), the best counterpain of verdours, a table cloth of dray and my best horse save one. ITEM; I give and bequeath unto my daughter Beatrice PYGOTT my salt all gilt, a featherbed, a bolster, my best gown, my best kirtle, a gold ring with a diamond. ITEM; I give and bequeath unto my daughter JULIAN NORWICH and my son in law Robert NORWICH my pot of silver, 2 salts with the cover parcel gilt, a table cloth of dray, and a dozen dray napkins. ITEM; I give and bequeath to my daughter Elizabeth SPELMAN my drinking pot of silver with the cover. ITEM; I give and bequeath to my daughter Anne WODE my better goblet without a cover, a pair of sheets of 2 [breadths] [xxx], a table cloth of draper. ITEM; I give and bequeath unto my daughter Maude my [suaged] cup gilt without a cover, a pair of sheets of 2 [breadths] [xxx], a featherbed, a bolster, a short pillow of down, and toward the [announcement] of her marriage 20 pounds of lawful money which 20 pounds I will shall be paid by the discretion of my executors. ITEM; I give and bequeath to my son John TYRELL my basin and ewer of silver and my gilt cup with the cover. ITEM; I give and bequeath unto my sons John Tyrell and Humfrey Tyrell all that belongs to the kitchen except that that is given to other persons in this my said will, the said John Tyrell to have the 2 parts of it and the said Humfrey the other part. ITEM; I give and bequeath unto my brother William WALWYN my best horse. ITEM; I give and bequeath to my brother Foulke WALWYN in money 13 shillings and 4 pence. ITEM; I give and bequeath to the Abbot of Waltham of his charity to pray for me 6 shillings and 8 pence and to every canon of the said house eight pence. ITEM; I give and bequeath to the White Friars of London evenly to be divided amongst them to pray for my soul and all Christian souls twenty shillings. ITEM; I give and bequeath to Richard Egerton my servant a featherbed, a bolster, a pair of blankets, a [kewing] of red and green and ten shillings in money. ITEM; I give and bequeath to my servant Henry Shots a featherbed, a mattress, a bolster, a pair of blankets, a [keneryng] of red and green, a brass pot, a brass pan, a kettle and my pewter dishes. ITEM; I give and bequeath unto Richard Messenger my servant a cow with a calf and ten shillings in money, and also I will my executors do pay to the said Richard five years after my decease every year ten shillings if he live so long and longer if my executors see that it will be so borne of my goods. ITEM; I give and bequeath unto Humfrey Dorre my husband’s godson, a mattress, a [kevering] of a bed, a pair of sheets. ITEM; I will that every servant that is in my house not before remembered shall have 20 pence apiece besides their wage. ITEM; I give and bequeath to the highways where it shall be thought most convenient by the discretion of my executors 45 shillings. ITEM; I give to Anne TYRELL daughter of my son John Tyrell 10 pounds if it may be borne. ITEM; the residue of all my stuff of household stuff not otherwise bequeathed my debts plate jewels horses cows and other chattels excepted I give and bequeath unto my son John Tyrell and of this my said last will and testament I make and ordain my executors my said son John Tyrell and my son in law Robert Norwich and to the same Robert Norwich I give and bequeath 6 pounds 13 shillings 4 pence for his labour pain and [besynes] that he shall take and have about the performance of this my last will if he do take upon him the charge of the same, and my brother William Walwyn to be my supervisor.
