In the name of God Amen, I JUDITH EDRIDGE of Buntingford in the County of Hertford Widow the eight day of April in the year of our Lord God one thousand six hundred eighty and four being in health and perfect memory praised be Almighty God therefore but considering nothing is so sure as death and nothing is more uncertain as when it may happen I do make this my last will and testament revoking all former wills; first and principally I commend my soul into the hands of Almighty God my maker hoping to be saved through the merits of Jesus Christ my Redeemer; my body I commit to the earth to be buried in Christian like manner at the discretion of my executor hereafter named; and as concerning such goods and chattels that it has pleased God to make me a disposer of I give bequeath and devise the same as follows: Inprimis I give and bequeath unto the wife of my cousin WILLIAM WALTHAM twenty pounds and unto my said cousin William Waltham five pounds; and in case the said William Waltham and his wife or either of them shall happen to die before their legacies be paid unto them then I will that the share of him or her so dying shall be paid equally amongst their children.  ITEM; I give and bequeath unto my cousin HARPER’s wife ten pounds and unto my cousin Harper five pounds; and in the case they or either of them die before their legacies be paid unto them then I will that the share of him or her so dying shall be paid equally amongst their children.  ITEM; I bequeath unto my cousin JOHN WYNCH five pounds to buy him a piece of plate to be paid unto him when he shall be of the age of one and twenty years; and if he shall die before he be of that age then I give the same five pounds unto such of my cousin Waltham his children as shall be alive at the death of my said cousin John equally to be divided amongst them.  ITEM; I give unto my cousin SUSAN BURT five pounds and to my cousin JOHN BURT twenty shillings to buy him a ring.  ITEM; I give unto my cousin NORTHAWAY ten shillings.  ITEM; I give unto my son THOMAS ten pounds and to his wife five pounds.  ITEM; I give to my Goddaughter his daughter JUDITH fifty shillings to be paid unto her when she shall be of the age of eighteen years and if she shall die before she be of that age then I give the same fifty shillings unto such of my son Thomas his children as shall be alive at the death of the said Judith my goddaughter equally to be divided amongst them.  ITEM; I give unto the said Judith one silver noggin a pair of flaxen sheets and a pair of pillow beers a dozen of flax napkins and a table cloth.  ITEM; I give unto my son JOHN EDRIDGE seventeen pounds and to his wife five pounds and also the box I bought when I was last at London and half that which is in the said box and the other half I give to Thomas’s wife.  ITEM; I give all my farrindine clothes to my said son John’s wife and to my said son Thomas’s wife to be equally divided between them.  ITEM; I give unto JOHN EDRIDGE my grandchild a silver tankard and a guinea.  ITEM; I give unto SARAH EDRIDGE my grandchild a broad piece of gold and the black trunk in my chamber.  ITEM; I give unto my goddaughter JUDITH EDRIDGE daughter of my said son John Edridge the bed in the chamber wherein I now lie.  ITEM; I give unto my son WILLIAM EDRIDGE five pounds to buy him a gown.  ITEM; I give to my daughter DOROTHA CUTHBERT five pounds.  ITEM; I give unto MARY EDRIDGE my granddaughter a guinea to be paid to her when she shall be at the age of eighteen years.  ITEM; I give unto ELIZABETH EDRIDGE my grandchild a guinea to be paid to her when she shall be at the age of eighteen years.  ITEM; I give unto my sister WYNCH the widow of my brother JOHN WYNCH and to my cousin ROUS and his wife and to my cousin PEADE and his wife and to my brother MATTINGLY and his wife and to Mr Duckfield and his wife ten shillings a piece to buy them rings.  All the rest and residue of my money goods and chattels whatsoever or wheresoever my debts and funeral expenses being paid and discharged I give unto my goddaughter Judith the daughter of my son John Edridge and I make my said son John Edridge my sole executor of this my last will and testament; in witness whereof I have hereunto put my hand and seal and publish this my last will and testament the day and year first above written – Judith Edridge – signed sealed published and declared to be the last will and testament of the above named Judith Eldridge in the presence of Geo: Bullen, William Prestland his mark; Anne Parker her mark. ITEM; I give unto the poor of Aspiden and to the poor of Layston forty shillings to be distributed amongst them in bread at the day of my funeral.
