1618 Robert Winch of Bray

In the name of God Amen; the third day of September AD 1614 I ROBERT WINCHE of Kembers of the Parish of Braye in the county of Berk yeoman well considering and knowing the brittle and uncertain estate of man’s life in this transitory world and being in good health and perfect mind and memory, I praise Almighty God for it, do make this my last will and testament in manner and form following; that is to say: first I bequeath my soul unto Almighty God and unto Jesu Christ my only Redeemer and Saviour in whom I do trust to be saved by the merits of his most precious death and bloodshedding; and my body to be buried in the churchyard of Bray.  ITEM; I do give and bequeath unto my son SYMON WINCHE forty shillings of lawful English money and one brown cow.  ITEM; I do give and bequeath unto ROBERT WINCHE my son forty shillings of lawful English money, my worst featherbed and bolster, a [healinge], my best cloak, my best doublet, a black cow and the great old chest.  ITEM; I do give and bequeath unto JOHN WINCHE my son forty shillings of lawful English money, a flockbed, a bolster, a [healinge] and all my other wearing apparel, my best bullock, my pot that was my brother’s and three sheep.  ITEM; I do give and bequeath unto RICHARD WINCHE my son forty shillings of lawful English money, one cow, my best joined bedstead, my best cupboard in the hall, my joined square table with a cupboard in it, my greatest chest, my best kettle and spice mortar.  ITEM; I do give and bequeath unto MARGARET ROCKOLL my daughter twenty shillings of lawful English money, a featherbed, one pair of sheets, the bedstead in the loft, the best coverlet (except the rug) and the second bolster [deleted: ITEM; I do give and bequeath unto ELIZABETH BROWNE my daughter twenty shillings of lawful English money, one pair of sheets, my brass pot and one table cloth].  ITEM; I do give and bequeath unto JOANE HOLLON my daughter twenty shillings of lawful English money, one pair of sheets, the second kettle and one table cloth.  ITEM; I do give and bequeath unto every of my children’s children five shillings apiece of lawful English money.  ITEM; I do give and bequeath unto James Teyle one sheep.  ITEM; I do give and bequeath unto ANNE ROCKOLL my daughter’s daughter my great joined chest, one pillow, one pillowbeere and two table napkins.  ITEM; I do give and bequeath unto JOHN HOLLON my Godson one pewter platter.  ITEM; I do give and bequeath unto JOHN WINCH my Godson one pewter platter.  ITEM; I do give and bequeath unto MARGARET WINCHE the daughter of JOHN WINCH one pewter dish.  ITEM; I do give and bequeath unto ROBERT WINCH the son of Robert Winch my son a pewter dish and a pewter candlestick.  ITEM; I do give and bequeath unto ANNE WINCH my son Robert’s daughter a pewter dish and a pewter candlestick.  ITEM; I do give and bequeath unto my three Godchildren John Hollon, RICHARD WINCH and John Winch every of them one sheep.  ITEM; I do give and bequeath unto JAMES WINCHE my grandchild one bullock. ITEM; I do give and bequeath unto Grace Bowyer one pair of sheets.  ITEM; All the residue of my goods chattels money and debts herein not given and bequeathed after my debts paid and my burial expenses discharged I do wholly give and bequeath unto Symon and Richard Winch my sons to the intent that they the said Symon and Richard shall divide and give unto their two brethren my sons Robert and John Winch the one half of all the said goods chattels money and debts last recited to be equally divided between them and to that intent and purpose I do ordain and make them my said sons Symon and Richard joint executors of this my present  testament and last will upon trust to make such division of my goods chattels money and debts as before is mentioned and not otherwise; and I do ordain constitute and make my loving good friends SYMON WINCH my kinsman and RAPHE ROCKOLL my son in law supervisors and overseers of this my will, and I do give unto them two shillings apiece for their pains to be taken in seeing this my last will and testament performed according to my intent and meaning.  In witness whereof I the said Robert Winch have to this my last will and testament put my hand and seal dated the day and year first above written 1614.  Signed sealed and published in the presence of those persons whose names below subscribed – Robart Winch [the mark of] Thomas Winche, John Winch, Rauffe Rockolle
