1582 Richard Cheverell of Blandford Forum

In the name of God Amen, I RICHARD CHEVERELL (alias FRANCE) of Blandford Forum in the county of Dorset do make and ordain this my last will and testament the four and twentieth day of December in the five and twentieth year of the reign of our Sovereign Lady Elizabeth by the grace of God Queen of England France and Ireland defender of the faith etc. First I give and bequeath my soul to Almighty God my maker and redeemer. And my body to be buried in the Chancel of Blandford Forum aforesaid or elsewhere at the appointment of my executors.  ITEM; I give unto John Ryves of Damery Court within the Parish of Blandford Forum aforesaid and John Swayne of Blandford aforesaid the sum of ten pounds which said sum my will is that the said John Ryves and John Swayne for term of their lives, and after their decease John Ryves son and heir of the said John Ryves and Robert Swayne son and heir of the said John Swayne and their heirs after them shall from time to time forever at their discretions upon sufficient surety lend the same unto the poor artificers of the Town of Blandford foresaid, as well in Pymperne Side as within the Boroughs between my house and the Crown in Blandford aforesaid the sum of ten pounds which sum shall be delivered within six months after my decease by my executors unto the said John Ryves the father and the said John Swayne to be employed for the mending of the said street at their discretions.  ITEM; I give unto the said John Ryves the father and the said John Swayne and to every of them a gold ring for a remembrance.  ITEM; I give to Mr Hansonne twenty shilings to make two sermons one at my burial and the other when the said Mr Hansonne thinketh good.  ITEM; I give twenty shillings to be employed to the use of the Church of Blandford aforesaid.  ITEM; I give twenty shillings to be delivered to the poor people of the alms house in Blandford Forum aforesaid.  ITEM; I give twelve pence a piece to every of my Godchildren.  All the rest of my goods my debts being paid, I give to my wife and my Cousin JOHN JAMES to be divided equally between them which two I make my executors.  ITEM; I give to my wife for the term of her life all my lands and tenements in Blandford Forum aforesaid and stock hyde or in any of them in the said county Dorset or within the print of the parish of the said Blandford Forum, the remainder after her decease to my said Cousin John James and his heirs forever. This I affirm to be my last will and testament. And I make my wife and my Cousin John James my executors. And my will is that they shall deliver my legacies to the Town and the poor people thereof within six months after my decease. Richard Cheverell alias Francis.
